Application for permission to demonstrate

in the 3 special protest zones during OG in Beijing 2008

Dear Sirs/Madams,

We hereby apply for permission to make a number of Orange demonstrations in the special protest zones. We are a part of TheColorOrange.net project, which uses the color orange to put focus on the human rights situation in China. For instance we have painted the Pillar of Shame – an 8 meters high sculpture standing in Hong Kong – orange.

The contents of the demonstrations will be activists in orange clothes with an orange flag. The activists will be walking around in each of the zones in about an hour a day and read aloud different texts about human rights violations. Also they will be painting symbolic short sentences about human rights on each others’ bodies with orange painting. We expect to be about 3-5 activists and one TV documentary.

The originator of these actions and the TheColorOrange project is the Danish artist Jens Galschiot, who is known for his making of peaceful demonstrations, where he is using the art and in this case a color to focus on problems about human rights.

We guarantee that we will conform to the instructions of the Chinese authorities and we do not want to organize demonstrations outside the special protest zones.

The reason for this late request is that we at first contacted the Chinese embassy in Copenhagen to know if we could come to China at all, and if they could give us the permission to demonstrate. As the embassy still has not given us any response, and we do not want to hold up the process any longer, we have chosen to apply directly to you.
